Foundations of Herbal Practice

The orientation you need to build an embodied, vitalist herbal practice.

Many roads lead to herbalism: a love of plants, a health challenge, wanting to feel capable of caring for your people. You know that becoming an herbalist requires learning, and there are so many ways to learn.

Self-study is an important path, but it can easily leave you with scattered knowledge and no system to organize it. At Terra Sylva, we believe in learning the basic relational skills, embodied practices, and herbal concepts together as a coherent foundation to grow from. This course gives you that foundation. It’s a low-cost offering built from the same lessons that introduce our certificate programs—it’s a taste of our teaching and our philosophy, and solid ground to build a practice on.

If, after this course, you decide to enroll in one of our full Fundamental of Community Herbalism guided programs, the price of this starter course will be deducted from your tuition.

You will learn:

  • How to use your senses to recognize the flavors and energetic qualities of herbs.

  • What those flavors and qualities tell us about an herb’s medicinal virtues.

  • How to recognize various patterns of imbalance in the body (the “tissue states”), and how to match the appropriate herbs to these conditions.

  • Concepts and vocabulary for understanding the ways herbs work in the body.

  • An overarching vitalist framework for connecting with  the body’s capacity to heal and how herbs can help support that process.

This course is for you if:

  • You have been studying herbs on your own but have never learned a system for putting all the pieces together.

  • You attended herb school without learning a cohesive system for the practice of herbal medicine.

  • You went to herb school in the past and want to refresh your herbal practice by solidifying the foundations of your craft.

  • You’re interested in Terra Sylva and want to experience our philosophy, our teaching style, and our approach to herbalism.

You’ll get:

  • 12 hours of recorded lessons

  • Exercises and practices for learning an embodied understanding of herbal medicine

  • A cohesive framework and skillset for building an effective herbal practice

  • Printable handouts for easy reference

  • Quiz questions, reflection prompts, and assignments for self-study

  • A forum for asking questions

  • Membership in The Grove, Terra Sylva’s online community

  • The ability to deduct the cost of this course from the cost tuition for either of our Guided Fundamentals of Community Herbalism courses

Price: $49
